Ulm leaves relegation zone with victory in Elversberg

SSV Ulm has left the relegation zone in the 2nd Bundesliga. On Sunday (September 22, 2024), the promoted team celebrated its first win of the season with a 3-1 (1-0) victory at SV Elversberg.

Ulm took a 2-0 lead thanks to goals from Johannes Reichert (27th) and Felix Higl (60th) before Luca Schnellbacher reduced the deficit (62nd). Philipp Strompf (77th) made it the final score.

“I think it was not undeserved. We gave it our all today to finally get our first win“, said Ulm coach Thomas Wörle.

Reichert converts penalty for Ulm’s first away goal

The first two good chances came from headers. First it was Schnellbacher who headed the ball just over the goal (18th minute), and a little later it was Niklas Kolbe who missed the opportunity for Ulm, who had been a little better in the early stages.

Captain Johannes Reichert scored his first goal of the season and the first away goal for Ulm, who had lost 1-0 in Regensburg and surprisingly won a point in Paderborn with a 0-0 draw.

Ulm’s Higl comes into play and scores with a free kick

Ulm coach Thomas Wörle made two changes in the second half, and one of them paid off in the 60th minute. Felix Higl, who came on for Semir Telalović, scored a free kick from around 18 meters. Goalkeeper Nicolas Kristof looked bad because the ball hit the corner he was covering.

The Ulm fans could not celebrate for long, because less than two minutes later Schnellbacher used his third chance to score.

Elversberg hopes in vain

SV Elversberg had renewed hope of avoiding their second defeat of the season. But Strompf’s header, which he was barely stopped from scoring in the six-yard box, made the Ulm fans cheer again. They ultimately celebrated with the team the first victory in the second division since May 2001.
