Phillies vs. Mets prediction, odds, likely pitchers for Sunday Night Baseball

Phillies vs. Mets prediction, odds, likely pitchers for Sunday Night Baseball

MLB schedulers did everything right when they scheduled tonight’s Sunday Night Baseball duel as an NL East showdown between the Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets.

The Mets, one of baseball’s better teams in the second half of the season, are clinging to a 2.0-game lead over the Atlanta Braves for the final wild-card spot in the National League. With seven games remaining, including a three-game series against the Braves that begins next week, the excitement for tonight’s game couldn’t be higher.

The Phillies, meanwhile, have stumbled a bit in the home stretch, but have secured a spot in the playoffs and would officially secure the NL East crown with a win tonight.

With so much at stake in today’s game, let’s take a look at the odds and then I’ll give you my best tip.

Philadelphia Phillies

Zack Wheeler: The Phillies need a strong star tonight with the NL East crown on the line. Wheeler has been one of the best pitchers in the major leagues this season, but has yet to face the Mets in 2024. It’s worth noting that he hasn’t allowed more than two earned runs in a start since July 29.

New York Mets

Luisangel Acuna: The 22-year-old has performed fantastically since being called up to the major leagues, posting a .385 batting average and 1.292 OPS since his first start with the Mets on September 14. If he can maintain this level of play, he will play a crucial role in these final few games.

It’s time for the Phillies to win the division. Their offense has started scoring at just the right time, and they enter tonight’s game with an OPS of .772, putting them fifth in the majors, two spots ahead of the Mets, who are seventh at .748.

It’s been the Phillies’ pitching in particular that has let them down at times this month, but with their ace on the mound tonight, that won’t be a problem. You could argue that the Phillies should be outplayed if someone not named Zack Wheeler is on the mound for them, but since he’s starting tonight, it’s hard to bet against them.

Give me the Phillies to do their job and secure the NL East tonight.

Selection: Phillies -148
