Sad Broncos, sorry Broncos

20 September 2024

Joe had to contend with rookie quarterback Bo Nix in both of the Broncos’ games this season.

Joe’s favorite line during the Week 2 game against the Steelers came from CBS color analyst Adam Archuleta.

After the Steelers’ second sack of the first half, Archuleta said, “Nothing went down without really being touched.”

Joe agreed. It seemed like every sack was Nix’s feet under pressure, rather than someone in Steelers black actually hitting him.

Aside from Bryce Young and the ever-on-the-ball Justin Fields, Joe hasn’t seen a rookie QB who looked as lost as Nix in a long time. Sad.

An example of this was the Broncos, who went all out on fourth-and-seven in the first half of their home opener on Sunday. Nix made a brutal panicked decision in the pocket without being under much pressure. He threw the ball into the arm of a defensive lineman at the line of scrimmage and the guy dropped it.

The Broncos were bad on Sunday. Pittsburgh’s 13-6 win wasn’t exactly close.

The Steelers led 10-0 at halftime and the Broncos were lucky that their first of six punts was not blocked. Denver was 2 of 12 on third down and conceded 124 penalty yards.

But Joe, what about Nix, who fired up and completed a 49-yard bomb throw to the Steelers’ 7-yard line in the third quarter? Sure, that happened, but the score sheet doesn’t reveal that it was a trick play where Nix was lined up as a wide receiver and made a lateral pass.

Nix’s next pass was an ugly interception in the end zone.

Joe sees that the Broncos have decent defensive talent, but their offense is more like that of a junior team.

Todd Bowles sets up all sorts of challenging attacks and blitzes for Nix, and Joe would be surprised if the Denver offense scores 13 points on Sunday at the Licht House.

Yes, it looks that bad.
