Since the beginning of the Wiesn, TikTok has been full of videos showing the goings-on at the Oktoberfest. Waitress Lena S. is annoyed about one detail.

Munich – Last year, several videos showing young Oktoberfest waitresses carrying 13 liters of beer garnered millions of views on TikTok. One of these videos even reached over 50 million views and showed a special technique used by the waitress to stack the mugs. Oktoberfest waitress Lena S. is critical of the matter.

“Every one of us wears this 13 Mass,” the 26-year-old emphasizes in an interview with us. “In the moments when I need 13 Mass, I wear it.” But I definitely don’t have time to make a video of it.” She explains that such situations are often stressful and there is a lot going on. “It’s just stupid to do this for TikTok and create a false reality,” she emphasizes. After all, it’s part of the job. Everyone has to be able to do it. “Of course people like to look at it; a decorative woman who can carry so much weight…”

When Lena is not under pressure and has a little more time, she carries fewer mugs. But too few is not ideal either. “Ten liters are much nicer to carry than seven,” she explains. The reason for this lies in the technique of carrying. “Personally, ten liters are the most comfortable to carry. The mugs fit together, you can lean against them and then I have them on my belt.” Her colleague, on the other hand, prefers a different number. “He has bigger hands, he likes to carry twelve.”

The myth of carrying beer mugs: “The belt is really important”

Carrying just two beer mugs, for example, is much more difficult. “It’s just like that, it’s physics,” she says. Everything is based on technology. “The fairy tale of carrying beer mugs is like a magic trick.” Once you get the hang of it, anyone can do it, says Lena. Another important factor for her is the wide operator belt. “That’s really important.” Resting the weight on the belt is extremely easy on the back. “Because it doesn’t cause you to arch your back or tip your spine.” Men don’t need this belt, they carry the mugs without it. “That’s why all the boys carry the food too.”

Many plates fit on such a “food sled”. Lena fondly remembers the moment when her colleagues carried over 30 desserts at once. “And then one table saw it and then a second table and then everyone clapped,” says the young woman from Lower Bavaria. They were very touched that everyone was so happy for them that they had mastered this challenge.

Preparing for Oktoberfest job

Waitresses at the Oktoberfest walk 20,000 steps every day. Waitress Lena S. tells us how the employees prepare for the job.

Man orders 13 liters of beer from Oktoberfest waitress – even though he doesn’t like drinking them

The strangest thing that ever happened to her was when a man ordered 13 liters of beer from her, even though the table was still full of mugs. “He then said: ‘Yes, but I want to see how you carry them.'” Lena then served the guest the 13 liters, he paid for everything including the tip and then said: “We don’t need them, you can sell them again.”
