Afghanistan decided for bat against South Africa

Having already won the series 2-0, Afghanistan made three changes to their starting XI for the third ODI against South Africa after winning the coin toss. Rashid Khan, who has been batting with a hamstring injury but still scored five runs in the 177-run win two days ago, was not named in the team on Sunday. In his absence, Nangeyalia Kharote and AM Ghazanfar will lead the spin charge. Afghanistan have also brought in an extra seamer in 19-year-old Naveed Zadran, who will be playing his second ODI.

The other two changes were replacing left-hander Fazalhaq Farooqi with Fareed Ahmed and leaving out opening batsman Riaz Hassan in favour of Abdul Malik, who will be making his ODI debut. Afghanistan’s decision to bat first means that South Africa will again face the most difficult conditions weather-wise. Afternoon temperatures were reported at 40 degrees, but it felt like around 46 degrees.

South Africa made just one change from the team that lost on Friday, replacing their left-handed seamer Nandre Burger with all-rounder Andile Phehlukwayo. The batting line-up, which struggled twice against Afghanistan, remained unchanged. Neither Ottneil Baartman, the death-bowling specialist who was part of the T20 World Cup team, nor seamer Lizaad Williams played a game in the series.

Afghanistan: 1 Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), 2 Abdul Malik, 3 Rahmat Shah, 4 Hashmatullah Shahidi (Captain), 5 Azmatullah Omarzai, 6 Ikram Alikhil, 7 Mohammad Nabi, 8 Nangeyalia Kharote, 9 AM Ghazanfar, 10 Fareed Ahmad, 11 Naveed Zadran
