Alexander Zverev should have been the star of the Laver Cup. But things are not going well for the Hamburg native in Berlin.

Alexander Zverev has played two matches as part of Team Europe at the Laver Cup so far. The German lost both matches in front of “his” audience in Berlin without winning a set: on the first day alongside Carlos Alcaraz in doubles against Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton, on the second day in singles against Fritz.

“I was a bit sick this week. “I think my heart rate was pretty high,” Zverev said, looking for reasons for the recent defeat. And he launched a broadside against the ATP: They “don’t care what the players say about the strain,” it’s all about money, “unnecessarily many tournaments” lead to a long season, the “longest in sport.”

No criticism of Federer

The Laver Cup, initiated by Roger Federer, has only existed since 2017. There is no obligation to work on it, nor are there any world ranking points. Zverev’s criticism is traditionally not directed at the financially lucrative show match, but at the rest of the program.

Because missing too many tournaments is not an option. “Otherwise the tour will continue without you,” said Zverev.
