At least four people were shot dead and several others injured in a mass murder in Birmingham, Alabama. CNN reported.

Birmingham police officer Truman Fitzgerald elaborated on the incident, which occurred on Saturday evening (local time), saying that two men and a woman were found “unresponsive” by officers at the scene and were later pronounced dead at the scene.

He gave details of the shooting, saying that several assailants fired multiple shots at a group of people in the Five Points South area.

The police officer noted that no one has yet been arrested in connection with the fatal incident, adding that the victims, including a fourth person who died at a local hospital, were in the public eye at the time of the attack.

Meanwhile, other gunshot victims have been identified in the area and taken to local hospitals.

“We have dozens of gunshot victims from this area [….] I was told that at least four of these gunshot victims [facing] life-threatening [injuries]the others have various injuries,” Fitzgerald said.

Hannah Echols, spokeswoman for the University of Alabama Hospital in Birmingham, told the news agency that at least 11 people injured in the incident were being treated at the facility.

While police are investigating the possibility of multiple shootings, investigators are looking into whether the attackers approached the victims in person or attacked them from a passing car.

It is still unclear how many attackers were involved in the incident and what their motive was.

The investigation is being assisted by multiple law enforcement agencies, with Birmingham Police attempting to obtain surveillance footage from nearby businesses.

“Rest assured, we will do everything in our power to ensure that we track down, identify and bring to justice those responsible for the attacks on our people,” the police officer said.

The incident joins a long list of mass shootings. According to data from the Gun Violence Archive, there are a total of 403 recorded in the country.
