French President Macron denies political motivation in arrest of Telegram founder

French President Emmanuel Macron addressed the arrest of the Telegram founder Pavel Durovand claimed that the action was not politically motivated.

What happened: The incident has sparked a heated debate about freedom of expression, digital rights and the balance between security and privacy online.

President Macron used social media to dispel what he said was “false information” about France’s role in Durov’s arrest.

He stressed France’s commitment to “freedom of expression and communication, innovation and entrepreneurship.”

Macron said the arrest was part of an ongoing judicial investigation and “by no means a political decision,” stressing that “it is up to the judges to decide on this matter.”

Durov’s arrest, which took place at Le Bourget airport near Paris, has raised concerns about the consequences for technology companies operating in Europe.

Law enforcement officials reportedly raised concerns about Telegram’s lack of moderation, claiming that the platform’s policies have allowed criminal activity to flourish.

In response to these events Chris PavlovskiCEO of the video sharing platform Rumbleannounced its withdrawal from Europe. Pavlovski expressed concern about what he saw as a threat to free speech, stating: “France threatened Rumble, and now they have crossed a red line by arresting Telegram’s CEO. Pavel Durovsupposedly because it does not censor free speech.”

He vowed to “use all available legal means to fight for freedom of expression.”

Why it is important: The incident has provoked reactions from several leading technology companies.

In conversation with Benzinga, Harry HalpinCEO of NYM Technologiespointed out the complexity of holding platform founders accountable for user content.

He said the introduction of end-to-end encryption could have protected Durov from these allegations, noting that “the owners of WhatsApp and Signal, which are end-to-end encrypted, do not face similar legal challenges.”

Paolo ArdoinoCEO of Holding strap USDT/USDwarned of the potential consequences, stating: “This arrest sets a dangerous precedent for the future of communications platforms. Centralized systems are inherently vulnerable to government pressure and without end-to-end encryption, user privacy cannot be guaranteed.”

Nikolay DenisenkoCo-founder and CTO of Brightcalled for a balanced approach and stressed the need for “clearer legal frameworks, more advanced technologies to detect illegal activities and faster moderation”.

The arrest has also bolstered support within the cryptocurrency community.

The open network TND/USDa blockchain project linked to Telegram, expressed its solidarity with Durov by updating its logo to the “Resistance Dog” symbol.

In the meantime, Tron TRON/USD founder Justin Sun proposed a decentralized funding initiative to support Durov’s defense and pledged $1 million if the community supports the effort.

As this situation continues to develop, the incident will likely be a key topic of discussion at the upcoming Benzinga Future of Digital Assets event on November 19, where industry leaders will gather to explore the evolving landscape of digital communications, privacy and regulation.
