Zverev criticizes ATP: “Season is unnecessarily long”

German tennis star Alexander Zverev has expressed his displeasure about the long tennis season. At the Laver Cup in Berlin, Zverev said that the professional organization ATP “doesn’t care what the players say about the strain” because it’s “about money.”

The ATP season is “the longest in sport” with “an unnecessarily large number of tournaments”. In 2024, there will be 68 events on the tour. The season began in December of the previous year with the preparatory tournaments for the Australian Open and ended at the end of November with the Davis Cup finals in Malaga.

When asked whether there could be a strike, as is currently being controversial in professional football, the world number two said: “We cannot strike, we will be punished if we do not play tournaments.”

World number three Carlos Alcaraz, who has already played 50 singles matches in 2024, was even more explicit: “The program will kill us.” There are “so many good players who are injured at the moment.” There were times when he, too, did not want to take part in a tournament.
