Miami man faces more than two years in court after angry shooting on Florida’s Turnpike

MIAMI DADE COUNTY, Florida. — A Miami man was charged last Friday, more than two years after he shot two people in a driving aggression incident on the Florida Turnpike, authorities said.

Jermaine Marquan Jackson, 30, is charged with attempted murder, discharging a firearm from a vehicle, shooting or throwing a deadly projectile and improper display of a firearm.

According to his police report, the shooting occurred on January 11, 2022, around 1 p.m. in the southbound lanes of the Turnpike at the Golden Glades Interchange.

Florida Highway Patrol officials said a man was driving a blue 2013 Honda Civic when he said a silver Chevrolet sedan tried to cut him off.

“When the victim did not let the Chevrolet into his lane, the driver of the Chevrolet pulled over to the side of his vehicle and fired 1-2 shots out the passenger window,” FHP Lt. Alex Camacho told Local 10 News in an email at the time.

According to Camacho, both the driver and his passenger, a woman, were shot.

He said the man drove to the Miami-Dade Police Department’s Northside District headquarters after the shooting and told an officer that he and his girlfriend had been shot.

The Miami-Dade Fire Department subsequently responded and transported the victims to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center, where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Camacho said the driver was shot in the right forearm and his girlfriend was shot in the left arm.

According to the police report, detectives first identified the Chevy involved in the incident and its license plate number, which helped them link Jackson to the crime.

Police said Jackson was stopped and initially arrested for driving without a license.

Authorities said he made an impromptu statement, but it was removed from the published report.

According to the report, Jackson was not immediately charged in connection with the shooting because “further evidence was being analyzed.”

According to authorities, one of the victims later identified Jackson as the man who shot him through a photo lineup.

According to police, recordings from a nearby cell tower showed that Jackson’s cellphone was near the crime scene at the time of the shooting.

According to the report, there were several attempts to arrest Jackson, but they were unsuccessful.

“On August 22, 2024, I was asked by the Miami-Dade District Attorney’s Office to complete forms that were missing from the 2022 arrest warrant for the defendant,” the arrest report states. “When I searched for the SID and FBI number to complete the forms, I came across a January 2024 arrest of the defendant for attempted murder by the Miami-Dade Police Department.”

Authorities said they learned Jackson was still in jail for that arrest and charges were filed Friday in connection with the traffic incident.

Since Monday, Jackson has been held without bail at the Metrowest Detention Center.
