House destroyed by fire in rural Surrey, BC

No one was injured when a major fire destroyed a house in a rural part of Surrey overnight.

Emergency crews were called to the scene of the accident on 164th Street, near 52nd Avenue, on the Serpentine River, around 10 p.m. on Friday.

When they arrived, they found a large house “completely engulfed in flames,” according to Greg McRobbie, deputy chief of operations for the Surrey Fire Department.

Emergency crews quickly raised a second alarm and firefighters fought the fire from the outside because a collapsed wall made it unsafe to enter the building, McRobbie said.

A total of 28 firefighters responded to the scene with seven fire engines, but additional personnel were needed to deploy five fire engines because the fire broke out in an area where there were no fire hydrants nearby.

McRobbie said emergency crews cleared the scene around 6 a.m. Saturday morning and found no evidence of a suspicious fire.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and a fire inspector is expected to visit the property on Monday, the deputy chief said.

He added that no one was home when the fire broke out and that emergency responders have no idea how many people will be left homeless or in need of emergency assistance as a result of the fire.

The burned-out house can be seen on Saturday morning. (CTV News)
