A more mature FCZ wins the classic in Basel 2-0 and takes the lead in the Super League. Coach Ricardo Moniz’s team impresses with a lot of reconnaissance.

Two mistakes by FC Basel are enough for FC Zurich to emerge victorious for the fourth time this Super League season and climb to the top of the table.

Basel gave the guests their first gift in front of 36,000 spectators after half an hour. The home team beat their own corner. Mario Baro kicked the ball too far, giving FCZ a chance to counter. The ball went via Samuel Ballet and Nikola Katic to Mounir Chouiar, who got past Joe Mendes and scored the opening goal. It was the 25-year-old loanee from Ludogorets Razgrad’s first goal in the Super League.

The second goal was also the result of a Basel player’s inadequacy. Shortly after the break, Jonas Adjetey let Juan Perea’s ball bleed off his head. The Colombian then had no trouble beating Marwin Hitz.

While FCZ missed opportunities for an even bigger win, FC Basel had to struggle in vain. Coach Fabio Celestini’s team rarely got into the dangerous zone. They lacked any creative ideas, and Xherdan Shaqiri also didn’t manage to achieve much in his debut in the starting eleven.

In the final phase, Baro, who had been at the origin of the first goal, was shown two yellow cards within nine minutes and sent off.

This is what FCB captain Taulant Xhaka said:

“Both teams had few chances to score, they took advantage of their two and we didn’t.”
The coach prepared us and told us not to try long balls because they have big defenders. We did the opposite, which I don’t really understand.”

FCZ defender Mirlind Kryeziu said

“I’m very proud of the whole team. We didn’t let anything through, Basel had no chance. If you defend so well for 90 minutes and then win, we can talk about the best game of the season.”

Lucerne won 3-2 in St. Gallen in the 7th round of the Super League. The Central Swiss team turned a 0-2 halftime deficit around. GC and Servette drew 2-2.

There were still two minutes left on the match clock when Lucerne captain Pius Dorn got the ball around 25 meters from the goal. The German didn’t hesitate, shot and saw the ball in the net to make it 3-2 for the visitors. Just a short time later, the home fans were cheering. But the penalty that had already been awarded to St. Gallen after a foul by Pascal Loretz on Kevin Csoboth was withdrawn due to an earlier offside position and the intervention of the video referee.
