Amazon has to discontinue popular offer – at the most inopportune time

The US giant Amazon is best known for its online retail. On the platform, people from all over the world can get everything their heart desires – and sometimes even have it delivered to their doorstep within a day. All you need is an Amazon Prime customer account.

This means you can not only use the free delivery service, but also watch series and films – some of them currently from the cinema – at home. To ensure that these are streamed in the highest quality, Amazon has even sold its own hardware. However, this is now set to stop for the time being.

Amazon wins in court

The Finnish telecommunications company Nokia recently sued the US company. The reason: Amazon is said to have infringed a Nokia patent by selling its Fire TV Sticks for streaming films, series, etc., as was first reported by “Wirtschaftswoche”.

The legal dispute is said to be about devices with HEVC technology for video coding. No further details are known. However, Nokia has now won its dispute with Amazon in the Munich Regional Court. And that has serious consequences. The US tech giant must first take its Fire TV Sticks off the market with immediate effect.

The timing is extremely unfortunate. Because the Amazon Prime Deal Days are just around the corner. The 48-hour shopping event will take place this year from October 8th to 9th and offers numerous top deals (>>> all the details here). Amazon devices such as the Fire TV Sticks are always among the best offers, which is why many customers are just waiting for this opportunity. But now the sales stop!

Are existing customers also affected?

The verdict was surprisingly quick and clear. Courts usually take up to six weeks to decide on complicated patent issues like this one. “It’s a slap in the face for Amazon,” said patent law expert Florian Müller about the clear verdict.

But do existing customers now have to worry about their devices? No. As an Amazon spokesperson explains, the ruling has “no impact on existing customers.” The US company is confident that it will soon have resolved the dispute with Nokia and will be able to resume sales of its Fire TV Sticks soon.
