Zarna Garg – Multi-cam comedy from Darlene Hunt, Mindy Kaling and Kevin Hart in the works at CBS

EXCLUSIVE: CBS developed Zarnaa multi-camera comedy with stand-up comedian Zarna Garg. The project, which attracted the interest of several networks, comes from The big C Creator Darlene Hunt, Mindy Kaling’s Kaling International, Kevin Hart’s Hartbeat and Warner Bros. Television, with which Kaling International has an overall deal.

In Zarnawritten by Garg and Hunt, Zarna (Garg) is a proud immigrant raising her American-born children with Indian values. But now that they’re getting older, it’s time for them to focus on their own American dream.

The story reflects Garg’s own history. She immigrated to the United States from her native India as a teenager and, after earning her bachelor’s and law degrees, spent 16 years as a housewife and mother before her children encouraged her to try stand-up, which launched her career as a comedian.

Zarna’s experience parallels that of Leanne Morgan, who also launched a career as a stand-up comedian after starting a family and is now starring in a multi-camera comedy at Netflix from Chuck Lorre, another experienced comedy writer and producer.

Hunt, who serves as showrunner, and Garg produce Zarna with Kaling and Jessica Kumai Scott on Kaling International; Howard Klein on 3 Arts; and Hart, Bryan Smiley and Mike Stein on Hartbeat.

Garg’s relationship with Hart dates back to 2021, when she won his comedy competition Lyft Comics on peacock.

Meanwhile, Garg posted on social media in May about her first meeting with Kaling. (You can see the post below.) Garg, who was traveling with her daughter, must have made an impression because just four months later, a project she and Kaling had worked on together was sold to a network.

At CBS, Warner Bros. TV has a number of comedy series by Lorre in its program, the latest of which is the upcoming Young Sheldon spin off Georgie & Mandy’s first marriage. Finding a template for the drama business between the two companies has proven more difficult. Cold Case Restart the last project that didn’t make it past the contract closing phase.

Garg was seen in the 2022 Apple TV+ series Bravehosted by Hillary Clinton and Chelsea Clinton. Her first comedy special, Zarna Garg: One in a billion, debuted on Prime Video last year.

The experiences of Indian immigrants are often reflected in Kaling’s work, especially in her Netflix series I have never.

Hunt recently developed and produced the Fox comedy series Call me Kat, which was based on a British format.
