The Batman 2: Co-author gives update on script and filming

Fans have been eagerly awaiting Batman 2, there’s no doubt about that. The huge success of Matt Reeves’ The Batman in 2022 left fans eagerly waiting to find out what happens with the sequel. In recent weeks, attention has shifted to the spin-off series The Penguin, but now new reports confirm that The Batman: Part II is also gaining momentum in parallel.

One of the screenwriters of the film “The Batman”, Mattson Tomlin, spoke on the subject while promoting his new series “Terminator Zero”. When asked about the status of the sequel, Tomlin had some rather encouraging news. He confirmed that filming will indeed begin next year, allaying fans’ fears that the creative team is taking its time.

Tomlin was clearly impressed by Reeves, saying, “Filming starts next year. We’re getting ready and I would say the bar couldn’t be higher. It’s a sequel to the first one.” He said the last few years with Reeves have been one of his best experiences, as he’s learned a lot about his ideas, his vision and his creativity. And he’s tried to absorb as much of it as possible.

He also added that Matt is a true artist “operating in a world where sometimes art doesn’t come through, and he’s trying to create something that really matters. So for me to just be there and be part of that process is pretty incredible, pretty awesome. I’m really excited about the film.”

There are several reasons that have delayed the production of Batman: Part II. The film was originally scheduled to begin shooting in November 2023, but it was later rescheduled for October 2025. However, the two strikes in Hollywood had a significant impact. These strikes not only delayed the completion of the script but also suspended filming as the actors showed solidarity with their unions. This strike posed a huge challenge for the production team and delayed the schedule by many months.

The development of Batman: Part II paralleled the rise of DC Studios, which is a factor that cannot be overlooked. The formation of DC Studios under the leadership of James Gunn marked the beginning of a new era in the DC Universe. Even though Batman exists as an Elseworlds property, completely separate from the central DC Universe, it must be somewhere out there in the air that both he and Reeves are discussing what their properties will really be.

Although Gunn will likely not be involved in the creative aspects of The Batman: Part II, as co-CEO of DC Studios he ultimately bears the burden of ensuring the film is released under their banner.

With The Batman: Part II drawing ever closer to its conclusion, everyone can be sure that the creative team, led by Matt Reeves and Mattson Tomlin, will not give up on the dream of making a sequel that lives up to the final original. With filming scheduled to begin early next year, expectations are rising for The Batman: Part II, as the premise promises another gripping chapter in this Elseworlds saga.
