Richard Torrez Jr. vs. Joey Dawejko new co-feature for Munguia-Bazinyan in Glendale

The fight between Richard Torrez Jr. and Joey Dawejko is a new co-main event on September 20 at the Desert Diamond Arena in Glendale, Arizona. The eight-round heavyweight bout is the co-feature to the Jaime Munguia vs. Erik Bazinyan fight, which will be broadcast live on ESPN.

Undefeated 25-year-old left-hander Richard Torrez Jr. (10-0, 10 KOs) of Tulare, California, won two fights by KO against Brandon Moore and Donald Haynesworth in 2024. 34-year-old Joey Dawejko (28-11-4, 16 KOs) of Philadelphia returned to the winners’ list last time out in April by third-round RTD against Walter Burns.

Las Vegas native Andres Cortes (22-0, 12 KOs) had to cancel his originally planned co-main event fight against Filipino Charly Suarez (17-0, 9 KOs) due to an injury sustained during training. The latter will now face Jorge Castaneda (17-3, 13 KOs) from Laredo, Texas, in the Munguia vs. Bazinyan preliminary fight live on ESPN+. The pair are fighting for the vacant WBO Intercontinental title. The duel is scheduled for 10 rounds in the junior lightweight division.

The fight between Emiliano Fernando Vargas (11-0, 9 KOs) from Oxnard, California and Irishman Larry Fryers (13-6-1, 5 KOs) from Albany, New York will now serve as the opening fight. The light welterweight contest is scheduled for eight rounds.

Among the other newly confirmed fights for the preliminary bouts is Demler Zamora (13-0, 9 KOs) against Gerardo Antonio Perez (12-5-1, 3 KOs) in an eight-round light lightweight bout. Jorge Garcia Perez (30-4, 25 KOs) and Ilias Essaoudi (22-2, 15 KOs) will meet in a ten-round super welterweight bout.

In addition, Art Barrera Jr. (6-0, 4 KOs) will face Frank Brown (3-6-2, 1 KO) in a six-round welterweight bout. The latter replaced the originally announced Jose Belloso (5-4, 5 KOs).

In addition, Alan Garcia (14-0, 11 KOs) will compete in the ring against an opponent yet to be named in an eight-round lightweight bout.

In the main event, former world champion Jaime Munguia (43-1, 34 KOs) from Mexico will face the undefeated Armenian-born, Canadian-based Erik Bazinyan (32-0-1, 23 KOs). The super middleweight fight is scheduled for 12 rounds.
