Kamala Harris sets fundraising record with $540 million after DNC | News on the 2024 US election

Harris’ team says it raised $82 million during the convention last week as her presidential campaign gains momentum.

Vice President Kamala Harris has raised $540 million in just over a month since she began her presidential campaign, her campaign team said. There was an enormous rush of donations during the Democratic Party convention last week.

A memo from Harris’ campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon said the $540 million raised included $82 million received during the week of the convention and was a sign of Democrats’ enthusiasm for her candidacy.

“Just before Vice President Harris’ acceptance speech Thursday night, we officially surpassed the $500 million mark,” O’Malley Dillon wrote in a memo released by the campaign on Sunday.

“Immediately after her speech, we experienced our best fundraising hour since launch day.”

“This is the highest number ever for a presidential campaign during this period,” she added.

O’Malley Dillon said nearly a third of the donations during the convention week came from first-time donors. About a fifth of those first-time donors were young voters and two-thirds were women. These groups are seen by the campaign as key voting blocs that Harris must win over to win in November.

Harris’ campaign says it has also seen a surge in volunteer support for the vice president. During the week of the convention, supporters signed up for nearly 200,000 volunteer opportunities to support the campaign.

Harris became the presidential candidate on July 21 after President Joe Biden withdrew under pressure from fellow Democrats who were concerned about his age after he stumbled during a debate with his Republican rival Donald Trump on June 27.

Harris’ candidacy has created a dynamic that has put Trump on the defensive and made it difficult for him to maintain media attention.

Trump has also proven to be an impressive fundraiser, but currently appears to be being overtaken by Harris’ month-old campaign.

Trump’s campaign and its partners announced earlier this month that they had raised $138.7 million in July – less than Harris raised in the first week of her White House bid. Trump’s campaign had $327 million in cash on hand at the beginning of August.

Harris and her vice presidential running mate Tim Walz are taking their White House campaign on a bus tour of Georgia this week to drum up support in a state that will play a major role in the Nov. 5 election.
