As the investigators announced, a resident of an apartment building on Mathildenstrasse alerted the officers on Thursday at around 2 p.m. after he discovered bullet holes in the kitchen window of his apartment.

During a subsequent on-site investigation, a federal police service dog found several cartridge cases at the suspected location of the shooter, it said.

Police also discovered two more bullet holes in the facade of the house.

It is still unclear when the shots were fired. It is currently being investigated whether there is a connection with the statement of another witness who claims to have heard loud bangs at around 6 a.m. on Thursday morning.

It is also being investigated whether the incident could be connected to the series of explosions in Cologne. The current state of the investigation suggests this, but nothing at the moment.
