Suspect in Watertown shooting arrested during risky traffic stop, investigation ongoing

A man arrested during a traffic stop Thursday is accused of shooting another man outside a Watertown residence.

The Wilson County Sheriff’s Office (WCSO) said officers were called to a possible shooting near the 6000 block of South Commerce Road around 3 a.m. Thursday.

Upon arrival, officers spoke with a mother and the victim, who was lying on the living room floor of the residence with gunshot wounds to his lower extremities.

The victim told officers he did not know who shot him. His mother said she called 911 when she heard her son screaming outside and brought him inside the house.

Sumner County officials, working with WCSO, located the suspect vehicle in Bethpage where they conducted a high-risk traffic stop.

When officers searched the vehicle, they found a loaded firearm, cartridge cases and several shot-out windows.

The driver, Dewight Corley, was taken into custody shortly afterward, the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office reported.

Corley, also a convicted felon, was identified as a suspect and faces several charges, including aggravated assault, possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and fleeing from a crime.

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. No further information is available at this time.
