Concerns about guns in NYC schools after incidents and shooting of teenager on Staten Island school drop-off

NEW YORK CITY (WABC) — A high school student is recovering Friday morning after being shot while leaving a Staten Island high school on Thursday.

It was one of three incidents involving gunfire in schools, also in the Bronx and Queens.

Two firearms were discovered at Flushing High School in Queens on Thursday. The discoveries occurred before 12:30 p.m.

Two teenagers, aged 17 and 15, were stopped when the weapons were found. Now, on Friday, portable scanners will be used to greet students as an additional security measure.

The Department of Education issued a statement saying, “The safety and well-being of our students is our top priority. We are grateful to our NYPD school security officers who responded quickly to de-escalate the situation, secure both weapons, and ensure the security of our buildings. The school has followed all procedures and we are working closely with the NYPD to take further action.”

A firearm was also found at Lehman High School in the Bronx in possession of a 16-year-old. It later turned out that it was a plastic imitation weapon.

But it was 1 p.m. on Staten Island when a teenager was injured in a shooting on a playground across from Ralph McKee Career and Technical Education High School.

A 17-year-old was shot in the left leg as he left Curtis High School.

Police believe the shooting was the result of a school-related dispute.

The boy is in stable condition, but the shooter is still on the run. He is said to have been wearing a green tracksuit.

A statement from the Ministry of Education said:

“Although this incident occurred off campus, it is a highly concerning consequence of the proliferation of guns in our city. Our students have a right to be safe in their neighborhoods, and we work closely with the school to ensure students have the resources they need, including support from outside violence interruption organizations.”

The shooting occurred a day after a loaded gun was found in the backpack of a Curtis High School student.

According to police, a 17-year-old had a loaded .45 caliber firearm in his backpack on Wednesday.

According to the NYPD, the 17-year-old student is a known gang member.
