Nokia obtains permanent injunction against Amazon, Fire TV affected

Nokia, always keen to protect its patents, has recently been granted a permanent injunction against Amazon. The decision was made by the Munich Regional Court. It concerns a standard patent for video compression. Nokia apparently wants more money than Amazon is willing to pay. The bottom line: The decision was made against Amazon, but no sales stop is imposed. If Nokia asserts the injunction, the company itself must deposit x euros in security, and then Amazon would have to take the affected devices off sale. It is important to know: The ruling will have no effect on customers who already own an Amazon device. We’ll see whether Nokia now insists on an injunction; there is still a court hearing scheduled for 2025 in the UK, which will address whether Nokia has licensed its patents fairly.

I already have an Amazon statement:

“We believe the decision of the Munich Regional Court is wrong and are confident that the situation will soon be resolved.” The ruling will have no impact on existing customers and a large selection of Fire TV devices will continue to be a long time coming Amazon.com available. We are always willing to pay a fair price for patent licenses and have worked with a number of companies to license video patents of this type. Nokia demanded more than all of these companies combined and rejected our fair and industry-standard offer. We regret that Nokia is trying to limit choice for customers.”
