No arrests in shooting in northeast Austin

AUSTIN, TexasNo arrests were made in a shooting in northeast Austin. The aggravated assault occurred in broad daylight at a traffic light on Tuesday, September 15.

FOX 7 Austin News spoke to a woman who witnessed the shooting.

“We were scared because we felt like it could have happened to us,” Sarah said.

Sarah and her partner were driving home from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. They were stopped at a traffic light when they heard screaming from the car behind them.

“My partner then said he had a gun,” Sarah said. “We drove off and called 911 from there. As we drove away, we heard a gunshot.”

Then she realized something was wrong. It happened in broad daylight, around 1:30 p.m., as they were driving north on Frontage Road at the intersection of US 290 and Highway 183 in northeast Austin.

“It was kind of a blur,” Sarah said. “We got out of there really quickly because everything happened super fast. I think within about 15 seconds of hearing the screaming, we were out of the scene.”

Austin police responded to an armed robbery that ended in gunfire.

“It seemed completely random to us, as if the perpetrator had simply stopped next to the car and started attacking the driver,” said Sarah.

Such cases are not uncommon in Texas. Daniel Armbruster of AAA spoke about how common such violent incidents are.

“Last year there were more than 1,600 cases of road rage accidents in the state of Texas, and those are just the ones that were reported,” said Daniel Armbruster.

According to AAA, there has been a significant increase in cases of road rage since the pandemic.

“There was an increase from 2020 to 2022, and it hasn’t really gone down since then,” Armbruster said.

Sarah is still shocked by the experience and has asked us not to reveal her identity.

“As far as I know, the perpetrator is still at large and I do not want to put myself or my family in danger,” said Sarah.

She hopes sharing this story will make other people more cautious. AAA has offered some advice on what to do if you find yourself in this situation.

Armbruster recommends: “Avoid eye contact and do not react aggressively. This will probably only escalate the situation and make everything worse.”

He added that you should not be afraid to call 911, drive to a public place and stay in your vehicle.

According to APD, the injuries sustained by the victim are not life-threatening. A description of the suspect they are currently looking for has not yet been released. The investigation into the case is ongoing.
