“If someone breaks into my house, they will be shot” during an event with Oprah

Vice President Harris said anyone who broke into her home would be shot as she spoke about controversial issues with Oprah Winfrey at a campaign rally Thursday night.

“If someone breaks into my house, they’ll be shot,” she said, laughing. “I probably shouldn’t have said that. My staff will deal with that later.”

Her comments were in response to Winfrey’s remark that she owns a gun. The vice president has publicly stated that she owns a gun, and she mentioned it again last week during the debate against former President Trump.

Part of Thursday’s event focused on gun violence prevention. A survivor of the Georgia school massacre earlier this month spoke before Harris. She was in class when she was shot twice and appeared at the event still in a cast. The Apalachee High School massacre occurred earlier this month when 14-year-old Colt Gray opened fire, killing four people.

In this segment, Harris discussed her gun violence prevention program, which advocates for an assault weapons ban and universal background checks.

“I think that for far too long, some people have been pushing a really false alternative on the issue of gun violence, saying you’re either for the Second Amendment or you want to take away everyone’s guns. I’m for the Second Amendment and I’m for an assault weapons ban, universal background checks and red flag laws,” Harris said, after which Winfrey was asked about her gun ownership.

Harris noted at the debate, “Tim Walz and I are both gun owners,” referring to her running mate, the governor of Minnesota, as she spoke about her gun violence prevention program.
