Jamie Gittens was named player of the match against Bruges. The Borussia Dortmund double-packer has a special place for the trophy.

Dortmund – Jamie Gittens has done it again. The Borussia Dortmund winger has once again demonstrated his qualities on the flanks and shone as a substitute.

Another BVB hero: Gittens shines with a brace

Gittens became a hero on the first Bundesliga matchday when he was substituted after 60 minutes in the Bundesliga home game against Eintracht Frankfurt and single-handedly sealed the 2-0 victory. On Wednesday evening, the Englishman came on the field after just under 70 minutes in the Champions League game against FC Bruges (3-0), scored another brace (76th, 86th) and put BVB back on the road to victory.

During the pre-season, Gittens had already set himself high goals for his fourth professional year in Dortmund. Across all competitions, four goals in a season are already his personal best, and he is mainly used as a substitute behind Donyell Malen and Karim Adeyemi.

“Reaction of a champion” – Kehl full of praise for Gittens

However, Gittens, with his speed and dynamism in direct duels, is expected to pose a threat precisely in this phase when the opponent’s legs become heavier. “We expect our boys to come in and change the game,” said sports director Sebastian Kehl according to the Kickers.

Gittens “came in really well” and showed “the right reaction” with his two goals, praised Kehl: “That is the reaction of a champion. Jamie did it really well again, he is simply impossible to defend in the box. Nevertheless, you have to follow through with this level of determination.”

Gittens causes laughter in the mixed zone

Gittens was rewarded by UEFA, who named him player of the match. The 20-year-old walked through the mixed zone in a good mood and with a small trophy in his hand, but of course he couldn’t avoid the questions from the journalists present.

“Not bad, is it? This is my first in the Champions League. “It’s a good, special feeling to receive this award,” said a proud Gittens. “The fact that we won the game is even better.”

However, his trophy may be at risk of being pelted with objects – at least if Gittens has as little control over EA FC at a party as some content creators on YouTube and Twitch. The award will probably be placed “next to my Playstation”. “Somewhere where you can see it every day.”

At the same time, the youngster announced that he wants to get even better in the coming weeks. “I’m trying to do stepovers,” explained Gittens, because he often creates danger with these. “I just have to train more to improve from game to game.” He certainly doesn’t lack the potential to be a regular, but he’s already making his presence felt.
