In the region. “Manga Day” is taking place for the third time. Magazines will be distributed free of charge in over 1000 shops and libraries. This is what visitors can expect.

For several years now, numerous bookstores have been clearing part of their shelves to accommodate a selection of manga. Japanese comics are still the trend topic in the German-speaking book industry, with annual sales of over 100 million euros.

It’s no wonder that “Manga Day” was launched two years ago as a counterpart to “Free Comic Day”. 30 free mangas are distributed in a print run of 800,000 copies in around 1,200 bookstores, comic shops and libraries in Germany, Austria and Switzerland – from romance, boys’ love, adventure, crime, sci-fi and slice-of-life to children’s manga.

These special editions were produced especially for the third day of the campaign and contain excerpts from regular manga with 96 or 128 pages. The organizers highlight some highlights. “The Curse of the Purple Smoke”, a fantasy/romance manga by the German manga artist Caroline “Racami” Tent, for example. Also included is “The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess”, in which the video game hero Link also becomes a manga hero.

At “Manga Day 2024” comics will be presented for the first time not only from Japan, but also from China, where comics are not called manga, but manhua. The small Manlin publishing house from North Rhine-Westphalia has specialized in comic art from China and publishes the most exciting comics in German. Those who are curious can take a look at “My Online Celebrity Boyfriend”.

The “Manga Day” takes place in Duisburg, Essen, Oberhausen, Bochum and many other cities in the region. A map with all participating shops and libraries is available online at www.mangaday.de
