Kerala Health Minister Veena George on Thursday said another person who had been in contact with the 24-year-old man who died of the virus in Malappuram last week had tested negative for the Nipah virus, taking the total number of negative results to 37.

She said this after a high-level meeting she chaired to discuss the situation here.

The minister told reporters that two more people had been added to the contact list, both of whom belong to the high-risk category. Among the people on the contact list, 81 are healthcare workers.

The minister said that a total of 177 people were on the primary contact list and 90 on the secondary contact list. Of the people on the primary list, 134 fall into the high-risk category.

“Today, two persons with symptoms were admitted to Manjeri Medical College Hospital. Including these two, a total of six persons are being treated at Manjeri Medical College Hospital, while 21 persons are being treated at Perinthalmanna MES Medical College Hospital,” she said.

George said those on the contact list receive excellent psychological support.

“Today, 265 people received psychological support through the call centre. As part of the preventive measures, field surveys were conducted in Mampad, Thiruvaali and Vandoor panchayats. So far, surveys have been conducted in 7,953 households, from which a total of 175 cases of fever were reported,” she said.

The 24-year-old man who died on September 9 was infected with the Nipah virus.
