The glass fruit microwave trend from the USA leads to severe burns

United States – More and more children and young people in the USA Want to make so-called “glass fruits” in the microwave at home and burn themselves badly in the process – they probably learned it from TikTokDoctors are now warning against the “glass fruit” trend.

The children heat a sugar-water solution in the microwave until it is boiled, then dip fruit in it and enjoy the crunch.

But the actually quite harmless cooking trend is not without its risks, the New York Post is currently reporting. The Shriners Children’s Hospital in Boston published a dire warning at the end of August.

Within just two weeks, two small patients had to be treated who had scalded themselves with the boiling mixture.

Previously, cooking enthusiasts shared the dangerous recipe on social media. In a video shared by TikToker Jasmine and Tea in April, which has already been viewed 20 million times, the influencer explains how to prepare glass fruit – a Chinese specialty – in the microwave at home.

She recommends heating the sugar-water mixture in 30-second increments for about five minutes until it boils. Then dip the fruit into the liquid and set aside to harden.

However, if you get scalded by the splashing sugar water, you risk third-degree burns. If your skin turns leathery and black after contact, you should definitely go to a hospital.

“When sugar is heated in the microwave like this, it has a very high heat capacity,” notes surgeon Colleen Ryan.

“And if it is then spilled, it can cause severe scalding, similar to spilling hot soup, but due to the properties of the sugar, it can cause much deeper burns. Children or young people can quickly reach for the pot or bowl and the hot liquid splashes […] on them,” warns the doctor.

Accidents related to the cooking trend have already been reported from both the USA and other countries.
