Tennis star Gauff separates from successful coach

Coco Gauff and star coach Brad Gilbert are going their separate ways. As the 20-year-old 2023 US Open champion announced on social media, the collaboration ended after 14 months.

“We’ve had an incredible run and I wish you all the best for the future,” wrote the world number six tennis player on X.

With the headstrong Gilbert at her side, she took the final step towards becoming a Grand Slam winner in New York – although the highly regarded talent was always surprised by the behavior of the now 63-year-old.

“He doesn’t sleep and gets up at 3:30 a.m.,” Gauff reported at the time. “And he gave me crazy playlists with songs from the 60s and 70s.” Gilbert also kept offering Gauff sweets.

But Gilbert, despite his support for Gauff this season, did not manage to pull off a second major coup, also knows how to win titles. He is the inventor of the principle and the author of the book “Winning Ugly” and once led Andre Agassi to success in six majors. He was also in the box when Andy Roddick became the last US man to lift the winner’s trophy in New York in 2003.

Gauff’s great success fits in with the series – but she is now looking for a different path for herself. “You have a bright future ahead of you,” Gilbert wrote on X: “I’m looking forward to the next chapter of my coaching career.”
