Trends at the Munich Oktoberfest 2024: What’s fashionable

Munich – It was only in the 1990s that the trend of wearing traditional costumes to Oktoberfest began. The trend has now become a kind of law. Wiesn time is therefore always traditional costume time. The question that comes with it, “What should I wear?” is quickly answered for many visitors to the world’s largest folk festival: the same costume as last year – and in the many years before.

Wiesn trends 2024: Blue-grey tones dominate the Oktoberfest

Of course, quality dirndls and lederhosen last a long time. A very long time. Sometimes a whole lifetime. Sometimes they are even passed down. Unlike designer fashion, traditional clothing is not subject to rapid change. The style of the dirndl and the usual men’s arrangements of lederhosen, jacket and waistcoat is very consistent. But there are trends here too.

A stroll along the shop windows of Lodenfrey and Ludwig Beck makes it clear: The 2024 Oktoberfest will probably be quite blue. With a grey veil over it. The resulting blue-grey ranks high on the trend barometer this year – and not just in the women’s segment.

Traditional jackets and waistcoats for men are also increasingly presented in blue. Sometimes completely, sometimes as a colored detail on the collar or hem.

Traditional costumes at the Oktoberfest 2024: Heavy textures look more fashionable than smooth, fluttering fabrics

In general, the overall impression of the traditional costume models on display is down-to-earth – and this is not only due to the colours, which this year have a reduced intensity and brightness, but also to the fabrics and innovations in the dirndl blouses.

But let’s stick with the colors for now. Pure gray, from light to dark, is currently considered to be very fashionable.

Shades of green are an indispensable part of traditional costume fashion and will be particularly popular in 2024 in shades of sage and olive. Red, in muted versions, will also continue to be an integral part of the traditional costume color palette.

Everything that was colorful, cloudy, dusty, matte and dull is en vogue this year. Everything that is bright, luminous and shrill is passé.

This also applies to the fabrics that are made from lace from traditional costumes. Cotton, linen, wool, felt and velvet are much more popular than shiny textiles. Designs with heavy textures and a pleasant feel currently appear more fashionable than smooth and thin fluttering fabrics.

The same applies to aprons. Shimmering versions made of silk or mixed fabrics are still standard here, but the very fashionable models promoted by dirndl designers and traditional costume manufacturers are made of linen or even corduroy and velvet. The black tunic blouse is also a fashion statement, and a high-necked version even makes a double statement. Showing cleavage is a thing of the past. The zeitgeist since “Me-too” and the increasing critical reporting on toxic masculinity have created a new awareness that is affecting the fashion industry’s image of women. The portrayal of women as eternally joyful objects of desire is out.

The fact is that many women have to fear assault as soon as the eyes of drunken men fall on their feminine charms. This is why opaque fabrics and long sleeves are also the focus for dirndl blouses.

For the same reason, calf-length to ankle-length dirndls are also very much in fashion. Mini-short dirndls now smell like mothballs and can therefore happily remain in the same.

The traditional shirt for men is white or light blue, made of cotton or linen and has a stand-up collar. Blue, red and green and white checked shirts, as worn by the majority of male Oktoberfest visitors, are something you will look for in vain on the mannequins of traditional clothing retailers. The fashionable alternatives, which also keep you warm on cold days, are close-fitting turtleneck sweaters made of chunky knit.

Let’s move on to the accessories: mini bags with a striking Oktoberfest cover made of felt or velour are neither classy nor cool and can ruin a stylish Oktoberfest outfit.

If you, as an adult woman, absolutely want to carry a heart-shaped bag, then please go for the luxury version, such as those offered by the Munich leather goods specialist Aigner.

From ballerinas to sneakers: Which footwear suits the Oktoberfest?

When it comes to footwear, there are no real Oktoberfest-related trends, but there are definitely models that go better with the traditional costume than others. Leather ankle boots are a good choice. Not only do they harmonize with the dirndl in terms of style, they also cause less pain to the feet than high heels, which in turn visually lengthen the legs the most.

Ballerinas – women love them, men hate them – are, like loafers, among the most comfortable Dirndl-compatible shoe models, but they also look a bit conservative. An exciting alternative are pointed pumps with a medium heel.

Despite all their comfort, sneakers with a dirndl are rarely accepted by style professionals. Their sporty aesthetic does not fit with the traditional character of the dirndl.

Whatever you like is allowed: If you don't want to be carried away by the blue wave, you can still find dirndls in strong, bright colors and girlish pastel shades in the traditional costume departments, decorated with glittering lace, sequins and pearls.

They are now socially acceptable with leather trousers for men, however, and create a smart look that says: “I’m tradition-conscious, but my leather trousers still have WhatsApp.” Even the traditional costume experts at Lodenfrey gave their blessing to the always controversial combination in a style tutorial on Instagram.

After all, there is no general style dictate and no fashion police at the Wiesn entrances. No matter how blue the outfit of the trend-conscious Oktoberfest fans may be, it will probably still be less blue than many Wiesn visitors at the end of the evening.
