Gary O’Neil has already confirmed that one player will definitely play for Wolves against Brighton

Gary O’Neil has already confirmed that one player will definitely play for Wolves against Brighton

Wolves will need to pull themselves together after their defeat to Newcastle United at the weekend as they next face Brighton in the Carabao Cup.

The Wanderers have had a difficult start to their Premier League campaign, losing three of their first four games.

Gary O’Neil’s team were unlucky against Newcastle and allowed two long-range shots from Fabian Schar and Harvey Barnes.

But on Wednesday evening Wolves return to the Carabao Cup and have the chance to react.

O’Neil said after the game against Newcastle that there would be major changes for this competition as several players are currently injured.

However, the manager had already named a player who will be in the starting line-up.

Wolves did a good job defensively against Newcastle on Sunday.

The return of Craig Dawson to the defensive line has had a positive effect and it looks like he will be a good mentor for Yerson Mosquera.

But according to O’Neil, none of these players will be available for the game against Brighton and Toti Gomes has also sustained a minor thigh injury.

This means Santi Bueno will start at the Amex. O’Neil said (via an official Wolves report): “Santi will definitely start. I have to name a team and someone has to play at centre-back – so Santi will play at Brighton on Wednesday.”

Bueno played for Wolves against Burnley in the last round and put in a strong performance alongside Dawson.

This was the Uruguayan international’s only appearance so far this season.

Great opportunity for Bueno

So Bueno will start against Brighton and it’s a great opportunity for him against a great team.

Bueno was virtually flawless against Burnley, but Brighton will be a much bigger challenge. He could also be the experienced defender, alongside a young player, given his quick reactions and fitness issues.

So he has to take more responsibility.

There is a player in Bueno, but perhaps we have not been able to see him at his best due to the competition since his signing.

Dawson will certainly have to rotate quite a lot this season due to his age, so it is important that Bueno is available, as we have already seen that the duo of Toti and Mosquera still need a lot of work.
