Berlin-based start-up Zolar abandons core business: mass layoffs threatened

The Berlin start-up Zolar wants to relieve a large part of its workforce. In the future, the company will focus on digital solutions for craft businesses.

The Berlin start-up Zolar is withdrawing from its original core business, the installation of solar systems for private customers. Zolar CEO Jamie Heywood plans to part with a “substantial number of our employees,” he announced on Wednesday.

Media reports say that more than half of the employees will be laid off. The workforce was also informed on Wednesday about the ensuing “change in strategy”. Zolar currently employs around 350 people.

In the future, Zolar will focus on B2B business and sell “digital software and financing solutions to local craft businesses.” The step is necessary in order to become more competitive.

The reorientation will have no consequences for existing customers. The company assures that all solar systems sold so far will be completed as planned and that customers will continue to receive support.
