Sasic wants more women in football

Women are often still hesitant about a job in football – Celia Sasic wants to allay these concerns. “Many feel a hurdle because they say: football is not my main interest,” said the vice president of the German Football Association (DFB) on Wednesday at an event entitled “Women in Football Summit” on the DFB campus in Frankfurt am Main. Mainly. They would ask themselves: “Am I even really into football? The only answer is: yes, of course!”

The idea that football and women do not fit together is “very outdated and no longer relevant today. In order to keep football capable of development and competitive, the competence and perspective of women is very, very important,” emphasised Sasic, who played 111 international matches for the German national team between 2005 and 2015.

However, there is still a lot of work to be done in the attempt to create opportunities for more women to develop in football, said Sasic: “Many leadership positions are not yet filled by very many women. We can still do a lot there.” In some cases, access to the sport is also completely lacking: “If a girl wants to play football, she may have to drive an hour and a half to training in order to even get involved in the sport,” the official pointed out. “You have to create the framework so that the sport becomes more professional.”

As part of the event in Frankfurt am Main, 150 women can find out more about the career field of football. The program is organized by the DFB, the German Football League (DFL), the VfB Stuttgart Education Academy and the International Football Institute (IFI). Among those taking part in the various panel discussions are Bianca Rech, director of the FC Bayern women’s team, and Marie-Louise Eta, who was interim assistant coach for the Union Berlin men’s team last season.
