There’s a weird trend going viral in Spain where people try to find a date in the supermarket with a pineapple – here’s what’s behind it.

Most people who have ever used a dating app are probably familiar with the frustration that online dating can cause. Ghosting, catfishing and stupid pick-up lines are part of everyday life. Now the Spanish seem to have had enough of Tinder and the like. They have come up with a new way of getting to know people – but this has caused confusion.

Since the beginning of September, singles looking for true love have been flocking to the branches of the Mercadona supermarket chain every day between 7 and 8 p.m. Their sign of being single is walking through the wine section with an upside-down pineapple in their shopping cart.

According to the BBC, the trend was started by TikToker Vivy Lin, who announced on her account: “The pick-up time is between 7 and 8 p.m. in Mercadona.” The content creator’s video went viral and caused some strange scenes in the country.

The police had to be called

According to the BBC, there have been reports from Madrid of groups of young people who spent evenings walking through shops with shopping carts without buying anything and “hanging around” in the wine section. As the online portal goes on to write, one man had to dress up as a pineapple for his stag party and stand in the wine section. In Bilbao, the police were even called because the trend led to assaults in a store. However, the police did not have to intervene. There are no reports yet as to whether anyone has actually found a date through a pineapple.

Incidentally, this is not the first time that the pineapple has been used in such a context. Traditionally, it is used to help people who are interested in swinging find suitable partners. In Switzerland, however, the pineapple trend has not yet really caught on.
