On Tuesday evening (17 September), VfB Stuttgart played against defending champions Real Madrid at the legendary Estadio Santiago Bernabéu to kick off the Champions League season and were successful despite a 1:3 defeat. How the new Champions League mode works

Each of the 36 clubs – there were 32 so far – plays four times at home and four times away. The top eight teams in the table qualify for the round of 16 at the end of the league phase. The clubs in positions 9 to 24 play in a new knockout round to advance. There is no longer a second chance in the European Cup with relegation to the Europa League – whoever is knocked out is really out for the season. From the round of 16 onwards, the premier class runs as usual, with home and away matches. However, the path to the final in Munich is already determined during the draw for the round of 16.
