Police delayed seizure of accused RG Kar’s property by two days: CBI | India News

Police waited two days to seize the clothes of Sanjay Roy, an accused in the rape and murder of a student doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, even though his role was established on August 10, a day after the crime, CBI officials said on Wednesday.

Roy, a volunteer police officer, was arrested based on CCTV footage showing him entering the college’s seminar room at 4:03 a.m. on the day of the incident.

His role in the “commission of the crime was already known”, but Tala police caused an “unnecessary delay of two days” in seizing his clothes and other belongings. This could have led to strong evidence against him, the officials said.

The Central Investigation Agency, which took over the case on August 14 following a direction from the Calcutta High Court, has arrested former school principal Sandip Ghosh and officer-in-charge of Tala police station Abhijit Mondal in connection with the case. Both of them were evasive in their answers, the officials claimed.

Officials also accused the two of “malicious intent” and said they had initiated the investigation to “falsify evidence” and “important data related to this case.”

The CBI is currently investigating whether there is a criminal conspiracy between Roy, Ghosh and Mondal, it said.

The CBI will confirm the details of “every single phone call” to verify the versions and thus examine “the possibility of any criminal conspiracy between the main and co-accused,” an official said.

The agency will show the two the CCTV footage from Tala police station, crime scene and medical college and also examine the mobile data extracted from their phones to “uncover the conspiracy/nexus, if any, and try to cover up the matter,” he said.

Mondal and Ghosh allegedly carried out the cremation in a hurry, while family members specifically demanded a second autopsy, officials said.

Ghosh was “deliberately absent” from the crime scene instead of closely monitoring the incident and taking necessary steps to secure and register the FIR as soon as possible, the CBI alleged.

The agency is also investigating allegations against Roy and Mondal made by the victim’s family members and public sources, it said.

The doctor-educator was allegedly raped and murdered in the seminar room of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in the early hours of August 9 when she was resting during her night shift. Her body with severe injury marks was found in the room by a doctor on rounds.
