We lost two members, 27 were hospitalized due to the destruction of our shops – Gbagi Traders

Traders at the New Gbagi International Market in Ibadan, which is part of the New Gbagi Petty Traders Association, say two of their members have lost their lives as a result of the destruction of their shops.

The traders also reported that 27 of them were hospitalized as a result of the destruction.

Chairman of the traders’ association, Engineer Kolawole Oyewole, made the statement while speaking to DAILY POST on Tuesday.

DAILY POST reports that the state government has demolished some shops in the market.

Oyewole noted that the traders had earlier staged a peaceful protest outside the Olubadan Palace.

He used the opportunity to appeal to the Olubadan and Governor Seyi Makinde for intervention.

According to him, “Two of our members have lost their lives. 27 have been hospitalized since the demolition work began on Sunday.

“The livelihood of our people has been destroyed.

“We appeal to the Olubadan to help us to stop them from further demolitions. They should stop the ongoing works to allow for a better discussion.

“They should pay for the damage caused to our goods. The remaining store that they want to demolish should be closed.”

“We are not represented by anyone, we represent ourselves, so no one should ever use our name to do anything again.

“We would be very happy and grateful if our demands were taken into account.”
