Travel guide names city in Saxony-Anhalt as trend travel destination 2025

The new “Marco Polo Trend Guide 2025” presents up-and-coming travel destinations in Germany – some of them seem unusual at first glance.

The “Marco Polo Trend Guide 2025” has set itself the task of presenting travelers with fresh and exciting destinations. The focus is on places that surprise with special events and new offers or score points in terms of sustainability. For Germany, a city in Saxony-Anhalt is at the top of the list.

Dessau: A must for architecture enthusiasts

Dessau ranks first in the trend guide of the top 15 travel destinations in Germany, Austria and Switzerland for the coming year. For architecture fans, the city is Marco Polo a must, because it is known for its Bauhaus. “Founded in Weimar in 1919, the legendary school for art, design and architecture moved to Dessau in 1925, where it set up shop in Walter Gropius’ brand new Bauhaus building at the end of 1926,” says the guidebook. Some time ago, an architect recommended IPPEN.MEDIA a visit to the Bauhaus city – especially fans of modernism would get their money’s worth here.

The double 100th anniversary will also be celebrated in Dessau from September 2025 to December 2026, with a series of exhibitions that will highlight the outstanding architecture. A special tip from the Marco Polo Guide: the possibility of staying overnight in a historic studio house, which is designed in the simple 1920s style and is located right next to the Bauhaus building. Apart from that, the travel guide also recommends a visit to the Dessau-Wörlitz Garden Kingdom, the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve and the student transcript of Luther’s lecture on the Epistle to the Romans.

Wuppertal: Emerging art stronghold

Wuppertal is also recommended in the trend guide as a top travel destination for 2025, especially because of its development into an art stronghold. The city in the Bergisches Land impresses with “hyperrealistic, poetic, surreal and abstract murals”, according to Marco PoloAs part of the “Urban Art Space Wuppertal” project, the city is to be transformed into something like an open-air gallery by the end of 2025. The impressive works of art are located several meters high on the facades and offer a visual feast for visitors.

Chemnitz: European Capital of Culture 2025

The European Capital of Culture 2025 cannot be left out of the trend guide either: “When, if not 2025?” asks the travel guide and names Chemnitz as a top travel destination for the coming year. The year as Capital of Culture offers Chemnitz the chance to overcome its outdated image. The giant skull of the communist revolutionary Marx is not the only attraction in the city, says Marco Polo.

The “Marco Polo Trend Guide 2025” presents a total of 40 destinations or activities worldwide “that are new on the tourist map, that will be hosting a special event in 2025, that will surprise with completely new offers or that are ahead of the game in terms of sustainability.” The selection was made by a six-member jury consisting of experts from the fields of tourism and trend research.
