Brentford 3 Leyton Orient 1

Fábio Carvalho crowned his first appearance at the Gtech Community Stadium with a magnificent overhead kick in Brentford’s 3-1 victory over Leyton Orient in the third round of the Carabao Cup.

Brandon Cooper gave the League One side a surprise early lead, converting Tom James’ cross from close range, but the Bees hit back before half-time, with Carvalho and Mikkel Damsgaard scoring their first goals for the club and Christian Nørgaard extending the west Londoners’ lead in the final minute of the first half.

Orient finished the game with ten players after captain Jack Simpson received a second yellow card for pulling down Kevin Schade.

Thomas Frank made three changes to the team that faced Colchester United in the second round.

Jayden Meghoma, a deadline day signing from Southampton, made his Brentford debut at left-back.

Mads Roerslev and Nørgaard also joined the team, while Vitaly Janelt, Keane Lewis-Potter and Frank Onyeka (on loan to Augsburg) had to make way.

It took Orient 10 minutes to create the first chance of the game. Jamie Donley’s pass rebounded off Ben Mee, who stepped back and the Tottenham loanee shot wide from the edge of the box over the outstretched leg of Yehor Yarmoliuk.

Moments later, the visitors took the lead. After a spell of possession around the Bees’ penalty area, James crossed from the right and Cooper sneaked in at the far post to convert.

But Leyton Orient’s lead did not last long. Schade received the ball in the middle of the opposition half, stormed past four defenders and his low shot was saved by Josh Keeley. Carvalho, waiting for the rebound in the six-yard box, was perfectly positioned to beat the goalkeeper with a great acrobatic effort.

Midway through the half, Hákon Valdimarsson deflected Donley’s shot from 23 metres over the bar.

In the 26th minute, Carvalho became the provider of the assist. The new signing had time and space to cut in from the left and cross. His cross was received by Damsgaard, who headed the ball past Keeley despite the goalkeeper’s best efforts to save it.

Ten minutes later, James set up Sonny Perkins 22 yards from goal and the striker’s shot sailed over the bar into the West Stand.

Simpson was then shown a yellow card for bringing down Schade as he attempted to intercept a through ball from Nørgaard and charge towards goal.

The Bees extended their lead in the final minute of the half. Meghoma’s arcing cross from the left was only half cleared and Carvalho beat Lewis Warrington in the box and slotted the ball towards the advancing Nørgaard, who shot straight into the far corner from 20 metres.

In the first action after the break, Donley won a corner and converted it. Simpson jumped highest to meet the ball in the box but his header flew over the bar.

Just before the hour mark, substitute Charlie Kelman ran onto James’ ball, stormed towards goal and forced Valdimarsson into a low save to the left.

Jayden Sweeney’s spectacular attempt from the left side of the penalty area flew well over the bar.

At the other end, Yarmoliuk released Roerslev after a fluid movement from back to front and the full-back fired a powerful shot into the side netting from just outside the box.

In the 69th minute, Orient captain Simpson received his second yellow card for a cynical foul on Schade.

Carvalho’s low shot from the right side of the box was parried by Keeley before Schade immediately passed the ball to Damsgaard, whose weak effort was saved by the goalkeeper.

In the 82nd minute, Roerslev crossed into the box and Keeley parried Keane Lewis-Potter’s header. Moments later, the O’s goalkeeper made a brilliant save to deny Bryan Mbeumo, who had advanced from the right and cut in on the left.

In the final seconds, Schade sent a cross from the byline and substitute Toney Yogane headed the ball wide.

Having secured their place in the fourth round, Brentford will have to wait until Wednesday 25 September to find out their next opponent in the Carabao Cup.
