Manchester United vs Barnsley LIVE commentary: Red Devils start cup battle against League One team – kick-off time, team news and how to follow

Manchester United kick off their Carabao Cup campaign at home to Barnsley this week and the game will be broadcast live on talkSPORT 2.

In the 2022/23 season, the Red Devils won the trophy with a 2-0 win over Newcastle at Wembley, but last year they put up a miserable defence of their title.

Erik ten Hag’s side were eliminated in the fourth round by the Magpies, who took revenge with a 3-0 win at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils, however, bounced back last year to claim another domestic success in the FA Cup, making it a trophy win for their Dutch manager in each of his seasons in Manchester.

However, another disappointing start to the league season puts Ten Hag under pressure to gain momentum.

Barnsley currently sit seventh in League One and are just outside the play-offs after a 3-0 defeat to Stevenage at the weekend.

But this was their first defeat since the opening game of the season and Darrell Clarke’s team head to the short trip to Manchester knowing they can spring an upset.

  • Manchester United have been eliminated from two of their last six third-round matches in the League Cup, having progressed in 14 of their previous 15 games – the Red Devils were eliminated on penalties by Derby County of the Championship in the 2018/19 season and 1-0 by West Ham of the Premier League in the 2021/22 season.
  • Barnsley are looking to reach the fourth round of the League Cup for the first time since 2009/10, but have lost all of their last seven games in the competition against Premier League opponents, conceding three or more goals in five of those defeats.

Man United vs Barnsley: Team news

The Red Devils still have many injury concerns, with Leny Yoro, Mason Mount and Tyrell Malacia definitely out.

Luke Shaw and Rasmus Hojlund are almost fully fit again, but it may be too early for them.

Meanwhile, Lisandro Martinez left the pitch limping at the weekend and should take a break.

Manuel Ugarte, on the other hand, could be in the starting line-up for the first time since joining from Paris Saint-Germain after making his debut in the 3-0 win against Southampton.

Marcus Rashford scored his first goal since March on Saturday and may get another chance to rebuild his confidence.

The Tykes will be without Donovan Pines, who suffered a concussion over the weekend.

Meanwhile, coach Clarke has announced that he may make restructurings within his team.

Man United vs Barnsley: What was said?

Tykes boss Clarke insisted his team had to play perfectly to get a result.

He said: “We want to go there and present ourselves well and I just want to thank the fans.”

“The tickets for the game are very expensive and I would like to thank the fans for the many tickets sold and their support for the boys. Hopefully we can make it an evening where we do justice to the city and the club.”

“I’m a realist. We have to get 10 out of 10 points and they have to have a bad day sometimes. The gap is huge and we have no illusions about that.”

“But we will prepare and plan professionally as always and freshen up the team a bit because we have another game on Saturday.”

“Maybe this is an opportunity for one or two guys to come in and stake their claim.

“It will be a proud moment for a lad from a council estate in Mansfield to lead a team against the team he supported as a young lad. But I want to have more proud moments in my career. I want to train at the highest level possible and do a good job for Barnsley.”
