WDR-Sport: Tennis – Struff as substitute at the Laver Cup

Status: 17.09.2024 10:30 a.m.

In addition to Alexander Zverev, a second German tennis professional will be able to enjoy the Laver Cup exhibition match spectacle in Berlin. Jan-Lennard Struff will be a substitute for Team Europe, which will compete against a world selection in the Arena am Ostbahnhof from Friday to Sunday.

Struff had recently cancelled his participation in the Davis Cup in China due to hip problems that had been bothering him since the Olympics in Paris.

Two substitutes

The 34-year-old will take part in all team activities and appearances at the event in Berlin, but will only be used if one of the six regular players, including Zverev (27) and Carlos Alcaraz, is unavailable. The second substitute alongside Struff is the Italian Flavio Cobolli.

For the first time in Germany

The Laver Cup, designed and co-organized by tennis star Roger Federer, has been held since 2017 and is being held in Germany for the first time this year. World ranking points cannot be won at the invitational tournament, but the event, which is named after the Australian tennis legend Rod Laver, is lucrative for the selected professionals. Numerous top sponsors support the event.
