The professional clubs of the Bundesliga and the Second Bundesliga also compete virtually. Until now, participation in the league was voluntary, but for the past year the 36 clubs have been obliged to do so. The SC Freiburg team looks back on its debut season.

“At the beginning there is just a blank sheet of paper.” “We built everything from scratch,” recalls Holger Rehm-Engel, who as Head of Club Media and Communications at SC Freiburg was given the task of developing e-football in the club. For the 2023/24 season, the German Football League (DFL) had obliged all professional clubs in the Bundesliga and Second Bundesliga to take part in the Virtual Bundesliga Club Championship (VBL), its own e-football team competition. The football simulation “EA Sports FC” is played there. So SC Freiburg, which had consciously decided against getting involved in e-sports up to this point, had to set up its own team.
