Florida Road shooting: Durban police officer shot dead after killing girlfriend in restaurant

City police and private security forces rushed to the bloody scene of a shooting at a Florida Road restaurant early that morning.

A popular eatery on Durban’s Florida Road in Morningside was rocked by a shocking incident in which an off-duty police officer opened fire and killed his girlfriend in the early hours of Tuesday.

Garrith Jamieson, spokesman for ALS Paramedics, said that when paramedics arrived at the scene around 1 a.m. they found four people lying on the floor of the restaurant.

The deceased woman, presumably in her thirties, suffered numerous gunshot wounds.

According to KwaZulu-Natal police spokesman Robert Netshiunda, the off-duty police officer was going to his girlfriend’s workplace.

“It is alleged that the woman went out to meet him – whereupon he pulled out his service pistol and shot her.

“The victim ran back into the restaurant and the man followed her while continuing to shoot. She was pronounced dead at the scene.”

Two men also suffered gunshot wounds to the upper body in the fatal incident and were taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment.

Almost a year later, on February 23, 2024, two suspects in this sensational murder case were arrested by the Royal Eswatini Police Service (REPS) and Interpol in the neighboring kingdom.

Last month, the Manzini Magistrates Court in Eswatini approved the extradition of the suspects – brothers Siyabonga and Malusi Ndimande.

The two face several charges, including conspiracy to murder, murder, unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition, and contravention of sections five and six of the Prevention of Organised Crime Act 1998.
