Concerns about police in Mayo grow as full investigation continues

Concerns about police in Mayo grow as full investigation continues

Castlebar Garda Station

An urgent appeal for additional police resources in Castlebar came as gardaí in the county town carried out a full investigation following an alleged attack on a teenager on September 14.

A young man is recovering at Mayo University Hospital from injuries sustained in the attack near the city park.

His injuries were described as “serious but not life-threatening.”

Since the incident, social media has been awash with disturbing speculation and innuendo.

Speculation intensified last Thursday when Gardaí carried out a series of searches in Castlebar as part of what they described as an “ongoing investigation”.

Citizens were able to observe significant police activity at two locations near the city center.

The Connaught Telegraph can confirm that these searches were directly related to the attack incident.

The Gardaí remain on alert as they fear an escalation of the situation.

Local councillor Michael Kilcoyne said there was great concern in Castlebar about the issue.

“I am also concerned about the fact that there is a lack of Garda resources in the county town to deal with situations of this nature and this needs to be addressed.

“We still have the situation where there is neither a superintendent nor a superintendent based in the city, and I think that is unacceptable.”
