The support of pop star Taylor Swift could help Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the close race with her Republican rival Donald Trump, according to a poll.

Shortly after the presidential debate between Harris and Trump last month, Swift endorsed Harris and urged unregistered Americans to register to vote in the November election. Swift is widely considered the most popular and successful music star of all time.

Now, a Yahoo News/YouGov poll conducted earlier this month found that while Swift’s endorsement is likely to have minimal effect in attracting new voters to Harris, it could help in another crucial area: getting Democratic-leaning young Americans to register to vote for her.

Over the years, it has become known that young Americans – who tend to be liberal rather than conservative – have not registered to vote.

According to the poll, only 8 percent of Americans say Swift’s endorsement has made them more likely to vote for Harris. But among Democratic-leaning unregistered Americans, 11 percent say the endorsement makes them “much more likely” to register to vote and then vote for Harris.

Taylor Swift’s support could help Harris in the close race

In the event of a neck-and-neck race between Harris and Trump, Swift’s support could come to Harris’ aid.

When a celebrity endorses someone in an election, it’s more about getting undecided voters to support the candidate or getting unregistered voters to choose the candidate and cast their ballot. And that’s where Swift Harris helps.

According to the Yahoo News/YouGov poll, 12 percent of eligible Americans meet the following conditions: They have a positive attitude toward Harris, an unfavorable attitude toward Trump, and they are not registered voters.

According to the poll, 11 percent of eligible but unregistered voters said Swift’s support made it “much more likely” they would vote for Harris.

While this may only be a tiny percentage of the U.S. population, if these people actually register to vote and end up voting for Harris, it would increase their support by as much as one percent, according to Yahoo News.

In the neck-and-neck race expected in November, an additional one percent of the vote could tip the balance in Harris’s favor.

Harris again ahead of Trump in polls

After last month’s debate, in which Harris cornered Trump and forced him onto the defensive, she is once again ahead in the polls.

In the days before the election, polls by the New York Times and Sienna College showed that Trump was ahead of Harris. According to them, Trump had the support of 48 percent of Americans, while Harris only had 47 percent.

Harris now leads Trump in the vast majority of polls compiled by the election data and analysis website FiveThirtyEight.

Overall, Harris is 2.1 percent ahead of Trump in the September 16 polls, according to FiveThirtyEight.
