Commercial fraud: Police: Actress Sumi Borah does not cooperate with investigation

Guwahati, September 17 (IANS): Controversial Assamese actress Sumi Borah – one of the accused in the multi-crore online trading scam – is not cooperating with the investigation, police said.

A senior police official said, “Borah has not cooperated with the investigation team since her handover and subsequent arrest. She cries during interrogation or otherwise avoids questions. The actress complained several times that she was not feeling well. However, she was declared healthy during the medical examination.”

Sumi Borah’s five-day police custody will end on Tuesday and she will be produced in court later in the day. Police will remand her in custody for another seven days.

Meanwhile, police obtained some information while questioning the actress’ husband, Tarkik Borah, and his brother Amlan Borah, who have been in police custody since last week.

“Tarkik and Amlan gave the investigation team information about two police officers, Shobhanjyoti Kurmi and Chandan Nath, who allegedly helped Sumi Borah and her husband escape after the scam was exposed. Kurmi and Nath even helped the duo destroy some evidence of this online trading scam,” the officer added.

The police have filed four cases against Shobhanjyoti Kurmi and Chandan Nath and questioned them.

Meanwhile, Tarkik Borah’s police custody will end on Tuesday and he will also be brought before the court.

The scam worth Rs 2,200 crore was uncovered in Assam after the mastermind of this scam, Bishal Phukan, was arrested from his residence in Dibrugarh.

Sumi Borah came under police scrutiny after Phukan’s arrest. Police alleged that Bishal Phukan used Borah’s network in the Assamese film industry to recruit customers for online trading under the pretext of offering them higher profits.

Borah and her husband went on the run after Phukan’s arrest and finally turned themselves in to the police the week before.
