At the start of the new Champions League season, FC Bayern will host Dinamo Zagreb at home. Will coach Vincent Kompany rotate compared to the Bundesliga?

Munich – The UEFA Champions League is starting the new season with a changed format! In the opponent draw, a supercomputer gave FC Bayern a home game against Dinamo Zagreb to start the season.

This means that FCB will start the CL season where it is also set to end: the final will take place in Munich’s Allianz Arena in May 2025. Just like in 2012, the German record champions will definitely be there. The first step on the way there will now be taken against Zagreb. But with which line-up?

Injury shocks FC Bayern: Who will play as right-back against Dinamo Zagreb?

After the 6-1 gala against Holstein Kiel in the Bundesliga, head coach Vincent Kompany has little reason to rotate the squad – but an injury has shocked the Munich team. Sascha Boey, who was in the starting line-up at right back against Kiel, is out with a torn meniscus. Kompany also has to restructure his defensive back four.

With Josip Stanisic, another right-back, also out injured, only Joshua Kimmich and Konrad Laimer remain for the position. Laimer has had a tough time under Kompany so far, but could now get his chance because the new coach actually sees Kimmich more in midfield. The other positions in defense with Minjae Kim and Dayot Upamecano in the middle and Raphaël Guerreiro at left back should be clear.

Will Kimmich stay in midfield and will Pavlovic return to the starting line-up?

With Laimer at right back, Kimmich will probably play in midfield, with Aleksandar Pavlovic at his side. The youngster was rested against Kiel and was replaced by Joao Palhinha. The Portuguese will probably have to go back to the bench against Zagreb. Unless Kompany relies on Kimmich as right back, then a double six with the duo Pavlovic/Palhinha would be conceivable.

In attack, Kompany once again has a tough choice to make. Harry Kane as striker and Jamal Musiala in the center are likely to be the starting line-up. While Musiala scored the Munich lead after just 15 seconds against Kiel, Kane scored a hat trick later in the game. The duo should be just as successful against Zagreb.

Who will Kompany rely on in attack? Müller is eager to be in the starting eleven

The battle is wide open for the remaining two wing positions. Serge Gnabry has been in the starting eleven in every game under Kompany so far and could also play on the right against Zagreb. Kingsley Coman was allowed to play on the left against Kiel, and the Frenchman is likely to duel with fellow countryman Michael Olise for a place in the starting eleven against Zagreb.

In addition, Thomas Müller and Mathys Tel are two other stars who have recently shown strong performances and are eager to play from the start. Müller is annoyed by his role as a substitute, and even broke off an interview because of it. However, he is once again in danger of being on the bench for the Champions League opener – unless Kompany causes a small surprise.

The expected Bayern line-up: Neuer – Laimer, Kim, Upamecano, Guerrëiro – Kimmich, Pavlovic – Gnabry, Musiala, Coman – Kane. (LuHa)
