Apple: macOS 15.0, macOS 14.7 and macOS 13.7 are available for download (6th update)

Apple today released the final version of macOS Sequoia 15.0 (Build 24A335) (we have pointed out the risks of switching to a new operating system major version early). macOS Sonoma 14.7 (Build 23H124) and macOS Ventura 13.7 (Build 22G123) are also available for download. The manufacturer is thus making important security fixes from macOS 15 available for the two official version series. Safari 18.0 has also been released.

macOS Sequoia 15 officially runs on the following Macs:

• iMac from 2019 series.
• iMac Pro (2017).
• MacBook Air from 2020 series.
• MacBook Pro from 2018 series.
• Mac Pro from 2019 series.
• Mac Studio from 2022 series.
• Mac mini from 2018 series.

Compared to macOS Sonoma 14, the following models are no longer supported:

• MacBook Air series 2018.
• MacBook Air series 2019.

These two models will remain on macOS Sonoma 14, which will receive security updates for two more years. The further Sequoia roadmap: macOS 15.1 will be released in October, according to Apple, followed by macOS 15.2 in December, macOS 15.3 probably in January and macOS 15.4 in March or April.

The most interesting functional extension in macOS 15 is only available for users outside the EU: The function called “iPhone Mirroring” allows you to control an iPhone with your Mac: The home screen is displayed on the macOS desktop, apps can be operated using a mouse or trackpad (including data exchange via drag & drop, customization of the home screen and display of iPhone notifications on the Mac). Apple cites “regulatory uncertainties due to the DMA law in the EU” for the decision. SharePlay screen sharing and some other functions are also not available in the EU.

Other new features in macOS 15 include the ability to arrange windows by dragging them to the edge of the screen, a performance-optimized game mode, improvements to the Metal graphics engine and the virtualization framework, a presenter preview for video conferences, reminders integration in the calendar, a history and unit converter in the calculator, solving equations in the Notes app, and Safari 18 (extended support for web standards, optimizations for the WebKit engine, improvements for video playback and Reader). Password management is managed by System Preferences in a standalone app.

Version 18.0 of the Safari web browser was also released today for macOS Sonoma 14 and macOS Ventura 13, as a separate update. macOS Ventura 13 will receive security fixes until fall 2025, macOS Sonoma 14 until fall 2026 (the same applies to Safari updates). macOS Monterey 12 is no longer maintained by Apple.

Before installing operating system updates, you should create a full backup of your Mac, for example using the Time Machine system function. A restart is required to install operating system updates. On supported computers, macOS 15 will appear at the top of the software update, with macOS 14.7 or macOS 13.7 (depending on whether Sonoma or Ventura is installed) further down.

Addendum: According to Apple, a total of 79 security vulnerabilities (CVE numbers) have been closed in macOS 15.0. For macOS 14.7, the manufacturer reports 37 vulnerabilities fixed (plus three separate WebKit fixes via Safari 18.0), and in macOS 13.7, 30 security vulnerabilities fixed (plus three separate WebKit fixes via Safari 18.0). The manufacturer is thus making the most important security fixes (with the potentially most serious impact) from macOS 15.0 available for the 13 and 14 series of versions.

2. Addendum: OpenCore Legacy Patcher 2.0 with support for macOS 15 is ready.

3. Addendum: macOS Sequoia 15: Apple announces new shortcut features.

4. Addendum: In a support document, Apple lists various new features and bug fixes in macOS 15.0 for enterprise use (affecting device management and network connections, among other things). Apple also mentioned improved performance of endpoint security applications with live detection and reliable reconnection to hidden Wi-Fi networks.

5. Addendum: Apple also provides information about the fonts included in macOS 15 and the camera RAW formats supported by macOS 15.

6. Addendum: macOS Sequoia 15.0 is now available for download from the Mac App Store.
