Maine head coach Jordan Stevens reacts to first CAA loss

ORONO, Maine (WABI) – The Maine State football team fell to the Monmouth Hawks 51-22 on Saturday, opening its CAA schedule with a home loss.

The highlight of the day for the Black Bears came when Trevin Ewing returned a kickoff 98 yards for a touchdown.

For his performance, he was named CAA Special Teams Player of the Week.

Unfortunately, Maine got on the scoreboard after the Black Bears trailed 20-0 in the first quarter.

Former Maine quarterback Derek Robertson returned to Orono with the Hawks.

He threw for 390 yards and scored four touchdowns, including a 94-yard pass.

Black Bears head coach Jordan Stevens said the key for the future is to tackle better and limit explosive plays.

“It’s going to be critical to find a way to do that. We have a big challenge ahead of us with Merrimack, knowing how tough they are on both sides of the ball. They fly around on both sides of the ball. We have a big challenge this week and we’re thankful to have another opportunity this weekend to go out and play,” Stevens said.

Maine next faces a three-game road trip.

The Black Bears travel to Merrimack and UAlbany before having a week off to prepare for Delaware on Oct. 12.

The next home game is on October 19th against Villanova.
