The Weber State Wildcats suffer a heartbreaking loss to Lamar

BEAUMONT, TEXAS- The Weber State Wildcats (number 20) suffer a heartbreaking loss to the Lamar Cardinals as they miss a last-second field goal and lose with a final score of 17-16.

The Wildcats traveled to Beaumont on Saturday to face members of the Southland Conference in the first contest between the two programs.

Summary: Weber State vs. Lamar

First half

After a back-and-forth game between the Wildcats and Cardinals, the score was tied 10-10 at halftime. Lamar opened the game with a monster 14-play drive that covered 69 yards and took seven minutes and 10 seconds. The drive stalled at the 23-yard line and ended with a field goal that gave Lamar a 3-0 lead.

The next two drives by both teams ended in punts, followed by a fumble by Weber State. The turnover allowed Lamar to have another 11-play scoring drive that resulted in a touchdown.

The Wildcats received the ball just over a minute before halftime and trailed ten yards. Weber State answered with a field goal of their own, passing the ball five times to Damon Bankston and setting up Kyle Thompson from 42 yards out.

On Lamar’s next drive, Weber State’s Montae Pate returned an intercepted pass 31 yards, tying the game at 10 points and giving the Wildcats the lead.

Second half

The Weber State Wildcats came out of halftime full steam ahead and marched down the field. Their first drive consisted of nine plays, including a 31-yard pass between Richie Munoz and Jacob Sharp that brought Weber State to the 2-yard line. On the next play, Richie Munoz found Colter May, who scored to make it 1-0. Kyle Thompson missed the decisive extra point.

Lamar matched Weber State blow for blow and answered with a touchdown on the next drive with a 72-yard touchdown pass. The Cardinals converted the PAT and took a one-point lead that they never relinquished.

On Weber State’s next possession, with 5:02 left in the third quarter, kicker Kyle Thompson missed a 44-yard field goal.

In the time between the missed field goal and the last two possessions of the game, there were punts and turnovers between Weber State and Lamar.

The Wildcats retained possession with 10:50 left in the fourth quarter and ran most of the time off the clock with a 96-yard drive that took nearly nine minutes. Weber State found itself in a goal-to-go situation at the 3-yard line but failed to sink the ball on four attempts and lost possession with 1:55 left in the game.

The Wildcats forced a punt from Lamar and got the ball back with 0:44 left on the clock. Richie Munoz took his Wildcats into the field goal zone, where Kyle Thompson missed the game-winning field goal with the final siren sounding.

Final score: Weber State 16 – Lamar 17.
