India and China, the teams that began their 2024 Asian Champions Trophy campaign against each other, will end their campaign together when they face each other again in the final at the Moqi Training Base in Hulunbuir, Mongolia, China on Tuesday, September 17. Defending champions India will be playing their sixth final while hosts China will be playing their first Asian Champions Trophy final.

Harmanpreet and his team will enter the final undefeated, having beaten China 3-0, Japan 5-1, Malaysia 8-1, Korea 3-1 and Pakistan 2-1 in the group stage before beating Korea 4-1 in the semi-finals. China, on the other hand, beat Malaysia 4-2 and Japan 2-0 but lost 0-3 to India, 2-3 to Korea and 1-5 to Pakistan before beating Pakistan 1 (2)-1 (0) in the semi-finals to book their place in the final.

Also on Tuesday, the two defeated semi-finalists Pakistan and Korea will face each other in the match for third place.


Why might China anger India?

While the Men in Blue are clear favourites to reach Tuesday’s final, they should not take China lightly. Despite losing to India earlier in their campaign, the hosts beat Malaysia and Japan quite convincingly in the group stages and pushed Korea to the limit before losing by just one goal. They also lost 5-1 to Pakistan in the group stages but beat them in the semi-finals to qualify for the final. So, despite being a small team, China have the potential to cause an upset if the stars align. Their quick counterattacks can test the Indian defence in the final. The hosts also have nothing to lose and everything to gain against Craig Fulton’s men on Tuesday, making them the ultimate underdogs in the title race.
